7 Side Hustles That Are Ideal for Writers

Side hustles are a great way to make a little extra money and if you have writing skills, you can do it. Lots of people take on second jobs to add to their income. Sometimes they are saving for retirement. Others are saving for a vacation. Yet more people just want to have more expendable income.

If you’re looking for a way to turn your writing talent into some extra income, here are some ideas.

Freelance writing is probably my favorite side hustle for anybody who wants to make money by writing immediately. The best thing about freelance writing is that once you have the client, you can ask for payment and do your writing.

This is not to say that freelance writing is an easy side hustle. You do have to prove that you are able to do the work. And that means that you need samples for clients to look at.

You don’t have to have paid writing to provide samples for clients, though. You can write articles here on Medium. Make sure that your spelling and grammar are correct and then you can use the articles you write here as a sample to show clients what you are capable of.

Personally, I love Fiverr. It is the one place where buyers and sellers can meet and be fairly assured of finding what they are looking for. It does take time to build up a Fiverr client base; however, with a little work, you can build up a business using your writing skills.

Note that Fiverr does take 20% of your income so price your work accordingly!

Upwork is very similar to Fiverr. There are some differences in the way you get paid and the way you find work. However, you can also find people who are looking for writers that can provide them with written content.

You might not think of website flipping as a way to make money with your writing. But if you build up a website, and get it traffic, you can then sell it. And you can’t get traffic to a website without content. You can even include the written content in the sale if you so choose.

Blogging is not an easy source of income if you’re a writer. There are other things that you will have to learn, like how to set up a website, how to get traffic to the website, how to write search engine optimize posts, and other things. But if you are patient, you can learn all these things.

You can write about passion topics or you can write about topics that you think will get lots of traffic. What kind of blog you have is up to you.

This site is one that has been around for a long time. Because of that, it has a built-in traffic network. When you write articles on HUB pages, they place ads on it for you and you earn revenue based on how many people click on the ads.

One of the things that I like about HubPages is that you don’t necessarily need to have a niche. You can write about a wide variety of topics that interest you. If you write a good article, one of the HubPages sites may pick up your article and give you more traffic and more earnings.

As you probably already know, Medium is a membership site where writers can earn money on their articles based on reads and views. There is no advertising. So you only earn money from the members who read your articles.

That being said, Medium has a built-in audience for almost every niche imaginable.
